About Assisi

The UNESCO world heritage site is one of Umbria’s more famous towns and has magnificent medieval and ancient architecture, making it very historical. The Roman Forum sits in the area between Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum and is now a huge tourist attraction, but was once the center for any commercial, political, and/or religious activity.

For some religious history for the family, one of Italy’s patron saints, St. Francis, was born here. The Basilica of St. Francis is worth a visit, as this massive, 2-level church is one of the oldest in Italy, consecrated in 1253. It’s one of the most important Pilgrimage destinations in Italy.

Another older architectural masterpiece is the Rocca Maggiore medieval fort built in the 12th century. It sits on a hill above the town and is an imposing bastion that looms over the hill town. This tower now provides 360-degree views of Perugia to the north and the surrounding valleys below.
